Show Me Tell Me

Questions 1,3,5 and 7 require you to open the bonnet and physically show the examiner where the item in question is found.

To open the bonnet pull the lever which you can see in the pictures below (this can only be done when the drivers door is open).

Below is a photo showing what’s under the bonnet and where each item from questions 1,3,5 and 7 can be found.

dipstickIdentify dipstick/oil level indicator. “Describe how to check” – I would pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean then reinsert and pull it out again check that oil level is between the minimum/maximum markers.

psteerIf the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.

coolntIdentify high/low level markings on the header tank and explain how to top up correct level – unscrew cap only when engine has cooled and never fill above maximum.

handbrakeApply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (handbrake) so that when it is fully applied it secures itself, and is not at the end of the working travel. It should also hold the car securely.

washerIdentify reservoir and explain how to check level – by opening and making sure the liquid is full to the neck of the bottle, if it isn’t I would top it up.

indicatorApply the left indicator and get out of the car and check functioning of all indicators (front and back), then do the same with the right indicator. (You will need to switch ignition on by don’t start the engine).

brakelightTurn on ignition (but don’t start engine) operate brake pedal and ask the examiner to check the brakes. If I was alone I could make use of reflections from things like garage doors.

footbrakeBrakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.

tailExplanation: Operate switch (turn on ignition if necessary), then walk round vehicle. (As this is a “Tell Me” question, there is no need to physically check the lights.)

tyresTyres should have no cuts or bulges and a minimum of 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

washer2Turn on ignition and pull wiper stick towards you and hold until washer sprays onto the windscreen and the wipers begin to wipe. For rear windscreen push stick in opposite direction.

demisterSet all relevant controls including; fan, temperature, air direction and source to clear windscreen and windows. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration

fog(No need to exit vehicle) Operate switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning lights is on. Explain use – I would use in poor visibility for example when visibility is below 100 metres.

beamOperate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light.

The head restraint should be adjusted on the rigid part of the head restrain is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. N.B> Some restraints might not be adjustable.

absWarning light should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
